How to Advertise a Home on the Internet
by Lizz Shepherd, Demand Media
Using Internet advertising to sell a house has several distinct advantages on more traditional advertising media. Internet advertising can be done faster than putting together print or TV advertising, allowing any changes in the home's price or status to be updated in minutes instead of weeks. Internet advertising is often less expensive than other types of advertising, and in many cases it's free.
Step 1
Use free classified ads online to inform local buyers about your home. Big-name sites like Craigslist and Walmart offer free classified ads on their websites, including real estate listings. Describe your house in the listing and add pictures to draw in readers who might be interested.
Step 2
List your home with a real estate agent who will list the home with a multiple listing service, also known as MLS. These listings will be uploaded into regional sites that can be seen by anyone interested in seeing homes in the area. This service is paid for by the real estate agent or the real estate company she works for.
Step 3
Create an eBay real estate listing. eBay has a specific category for advertising real estate. The listings are for advertising purposes only and are not used to make legally binding sales through the site. Buyers and sellers can use those listings to agree on a price if they choose, but any sales made through a real estate auction are not enforceable by the site.
Step 4
Create a website that is devoted to your home. Buy a domain name from GoDaddy.com or a similar domain name seller and put together a simple website that features pictures of your home as well as all of the pertinent listing information. Print the URL to the website on your home fliers or place a placard in your yard that features the URL.
