How to Build a Free Web Page for Advertising

by Melissa McKean, Demand Media

As a business owner, you probably know that a business web page is essential to your business. Though designing a web page may seem like a daunting task, it is actually quite easy to make your own web page using a simple open source publishing application, such as Wordpress.com. Wordpress operates as a blog publishing tool that gives you a customized web address, predesigned templates or the option of adding custom code, and different pages that operate like a normal website.

Items you will need

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  • Web page color scheme tool

Step 1

Choose the colors for your web page. Use an online color scheme tool, such as ColorsOnTheWeb.com. Choose colors that are easy on the eyes and peaceful to your customers. Use white or light-colored backgrounds with dark simple-to-read text for a clean, easy-to-read site. Also consider the colors of links in their various stages; meaning a different color for visited links and unvisited links.

Step 2

Design the header for your web page. Choose an image or graphic that matches your website color scheme and coordinates with what your web page is about. Be sure to use an image that is appealing to the eye, will not offend your visitors and is timeless, meaning it will not become outdated in a few years.

Step 3

Write the content for your web page. Use language that sells your product or service, and tells consumers why they need the product or service you are providing. Incorporate "keywords" that describe your business. For instance, if you are a company that sells shoes, use the words "shoes," "footwear," "men's shoes" and "women's shoes."

Step 4

Create a call to action that will be featured clearly on your web page. The call to action should encourage the visitor to take a step that will eventually lead to more business for you. You can urge the visitor to sign up for a newsletter, subscribe to your blog or print a coupon to be used for your service.

Step 5

Post contact information clearly so they can call, email or fax you for more information or to place an order or schedule an appointment.

Tips

  • When creating website content, write in a conversational tone as if you are speaking directly to the customer.

Warnings

  • Do not ever write in all capital letters, as this will make the reader feel like you are YELLING AT THEM.
