Apple releases new iPhone models frequently, and many of those models use different versions of the Apple operating system software. Additionally, some iPhone operating systems can be upgraded to a newer version, creating a potential source of confusion when determining what OS is installed on a particular iPhone. One consistent element of the iPhone OS is the "About" menu, which provides helpful information regarding the specifics of an iPhone device, including the currently installed OS version.

Step 1

Navigate to the iPhone home screen.

Step 2

Tap the "Settings" icon.

Step 3

Touch "General" near the bottom of the screen.

Step 4

Select "About" at the top of the screen.

Step 5

Locate the "Version" row. The number to the right of the word "Version" is your OS software version.

Tips

  • You can also check the iPhone OS version when you connect your iPhone to a computer running iTunes. Click your iPhone in the column on the left side of the iTunes window, which will open the iPhone summary screen in the center of the window. The OS version is listed next to "Software Version."
