How to Convert MP3s With Freeware

If you have MP3 audio files on your computer that you need converted to a different audio type, you can do so with audio conversion software, some of which is free. One of the most popular options at CNET's Download.com is Free Mp3 Wma Converter. This is an excellent choice for converting your MP3 files if you're a Windows user. If you have a Mac, you can use Switch Audio Converter, which is also very popular on CNET.

Step 1

Download and install the latest version of Free Mp3 Wma Converter or Switch Audio Converter from the CNET's Download.com. These are freeware programs, which means you do not have to pay to download or use them.

Step 2

Launch Free Mp3 Wma Converter or Switch Audio Converter on your computer. For Free Mp3 Wma Converter, click the "File" menu and select "Add Files" to select the MP3s you want to convert. For Switch Audio Converter, click the "Add Files" button to select the MP3s.

Step 3

Look for the field on the screen labeled "Output Path" in Free Mp3 Wma Converter. Click the "..." button by that field to select the location on your computer where you want the converted audio files saved. If you just want the new files saved in the same location as the original MP3s, simply check the box above this field labeled "Save in the file's directory." In Switch Audio Converter, look for "Output Folder" and click "Browse" to make your selection.

Step 4

Look for the field labeled "Output Format" in each program to select the output file type. There is a drop-down menu in both programs where you can select the output file type. You can convert your MP3s to the following formats in Free Mp3 Wma Converter: WMA, WAV, FLAC, OGG, APE, AAC, A3C or M4A. Switch Audio Converter allows you to convert to: WAV, AU, AIFF, GSM, VOX, RAW, OGG, FLAC, RSS, M3U, PLS, WPL or MOV.

Step 5

Click the "Convert" button in either program to start the conversion process. You can monitor the progress in the "Conversion Information" part of the screen on Free Mp3 Wma Converter, and Switch Audio Converter displays a pop-up showing the progress. When all of the files are converted, a pop-up will appear in either program to let you know. Click the "Close" button, and you can use the new converted files.
