How to Create a Site Map for a Blog

by Kara Page, Demand Media

Site maps are a highly useful, though not necessary, tool that can help increase your blog traffic. When someone uses a search engine such as Google or Bing, site maps help clarify your blog's content to the search engine, making it easier for readers to find your blog. Creating a site map for a personal blog or a small business blog is easy. For larger blogs, you may want to consider a service such as GSiteCrawler.

Items you will need

  • Computer
  • Internet access

Step 1

Open the Internet and go to XML-Sitemaps.com (see References). In the form on the left side, enter the full URL of your blog under "Starting URL."

Step 2

Fill out any of the other options if desired, although none are necessary to generate a site map for your blog. When you are finished, click "Start" at the bottom of the form. The process may take a few minutes.

Step 3

Click on the link below "Download Un-compressed XML Sitemap," then click "OK."

Step 4

Go to your blog's dashboard and open your public_html folder. Upload the site map file by clicking "Browse," then choosing the file you downloaded in Step 3 and clicking "OK."

Step 5

Sign in to your Google Webmaster account. Choose your blog, and enter the site map URL in the appropriate box. Click "Save."

Warnings

  • If you do not own the domain to your blog, you may not be able to create a site map. Those with Blogger blogs can add a Google site map easily by filling out the form at Hakuna Matata (see References). If you have a WordPress, Tumblr or other blog, (for example, if your blog is MyBlog.wordpress.com, rather than MyBlog.com) you can not create a site map.
