Designing a website for your school helps parents and students to stay abreast of everything that's going on. Placing announcements and newsletters on a web page can save money by cutting down on the amount of paper and ink you use. A school website can also work as a recruitment tool, allowing parents and students to research your program and curriculum before deciding to attend your school. Follow these steps to create an online presence for your school, from a simple web page to a complex site with many different pages.
Step 1
Choose a domain name for your school website. The domain extension for a school typically ends in .edu to identify it as an educational organization. Prices for domain names vary, but average around $7 to $10 yearly.
Step 2
Select a web host for your school's website. Ask questions to be sure they can accommodate a site for your school. For example, do they have backup servers and technical support?
Step 3
Decide what type of information to provide on your website. For example, what pages will you place on the site? You could have a lunch-menu page, for instance, maybe a homework assignments page, or a page for upcoming events. Will your school website include a staff directory and online curriculum?
Step 4
Choose a color scheme. A lot of schools opt to use their school colors as a color scheme for their website.
Step 5
Locate graphics for your school's website. If you're doing a sports page, find sports-related pictures and images, for example. Before using any graphics, be sure you obtain usage rights in order to avoid committing copyright violation.
Step 6
Begin designing your school's website by logging into your web hosting control panel. Open the "File Directory" to begin creating new files (pages) for your site.
Step 7
Publish your school website once you finish designing all of the pages. Be sure to update your website regularly to ensure that the information on it stays current.
