Digital Cameras That Record Audio
by Moriah Chesler, Demand Media
Adding voice to your still photos enhances your photo-taking experience.
Imagine taking beautiful photos of all the places you tour in a foreign country and not being able to remember the origin of those photos. Some digital cameras come with a voice annotation mode to tag a photo or series of photos when you take them. Other digital cameras are multifunctional and equipped with a voice recorder that you can use to record lectures and meetings. The recording limit is dependent upon the camera's built-in flash memory and external storage.
Casio
Casio Exilim series digital cameras are equipped with voice recording functions. The Exilim EX-S6SR model is capable of recording sounds up to 53 minutes and 11 seconds with its built-in memory. The Exilim EX-G1RD model has a voice recording limit of 1 hour and 52 minutes because of its larger internal flash memory size. The audio format supported on these cameras is WAV monoaural. Monoaural sound quality is single channeled, unlike stereo sound.
Nikon
Nikon's COOLPIX series cameras feature both a Voice Memo function that uses voice to annotate a photo and a Voice Recorder function that allows recording for longer length. For example, the COOLPIX S9 has a 20-second limit to the sound recorded with a photo. This model also has the Voice Recorder function that records sound and plays it back through the built-in camera speaker. You can also copy recorded sound from the internal memory to external memory with this model. The sound bytes are saved in WAV format.
Ricoh
Ricoh's RDC and Caplio series cameras come with a Voice Memo annotation function as well, whose audio is saved in either WAV or AVI format. Some Caplio series models, such as the Caplio G3 and Caplio G4, also have a multipurpose voice recorder function.
Samsung
Samsung makes digital cameras with Voice Memo and Voice Recorder functionalities. For instance, the 14.2-megapixel Samsung PL200 compact camera has a 10-second limit of voice annotation of a photo. The 12.2-megapixel Samsung TL105 model, on the other hand, has a Voice Recorder mode in addition to the Voice Memo function. It can support up to 10 hours of voice recording. The 10-megapixel Samsung TL500 model, with a rotating LCD, also supports stereo sound recording.
