How to Find Disc Space on My Computer

by Kristen Waters, Demand Media

Every file on your computer takes up space on the hard drive. As you add more files and programs to your computer, it is a good idea to know how much space you have left on the disc. The Windows operating system keeps track of the size of the disc and how much space has been used. This information can be found in the "My Computer" folder. The "My Computer" folder shows you all the discs that are installed, including hard drives, CD/DVD drives and USB devices.

Step 1

Open "My Computer," which is found under the "Start" menu.

Step 2

Click once on the "Local Disk (C:)" icon.

Step 3

Locate the "Details" section on the left side of the screen. The number after "Free Space:" tells you how much space is left on the disc. The number after "Total Size:" tells you how large the disc is.

Tips

  • You can also see this information by right-clicking on the "Local Disk (C:)" icon and choosing "Properties" from the menu that appears.
