How to Install New Fonts to Windows XP
by Kefa Olang, Demand MediaWindows XP comes with the standard fonts, which include Times New Roman, Tahoma, Courier New and more. However, if you are interested in fonts that are more creative, different and interesting, you can download and install them quickly using a simple process. Windows XP enables you to use installed fonts in system folders, on the desktop, and in word processing applications such as Microsoft Word and WordPerfect.
Step 1
Locate the fonts that you want to install to your Windows XP system. Many websites such as FontSpace and 1001 Fonts enable you to search for and download fonts completely free. When you find the fonts that you want to download, follow the guided prompts to save them to a folder on your computer. Make sure that you save them in a folder that you will remember easily.
Step 2
Click the Windows "Start" button, and then click "Run." Type the following command in the open box, and then press "Enter": "%windir%\fonts" (without quotes). This launches the font installation dialog box.
Step 3
Click the "File" menu, and then click "Install new font" to launch the installation wizard. Select the drive containing the fonts that you want to install. If your fonts are on a CD, make sure that you insert the CD into the CD/DVD-ROM drive on your computer.
Step 4
Select the folder containing the fonts that you want to install, and then click the font that you want to install. If you want to install multiple fonts at a time, press "Ctrl," and click each font that you want to install. Click the "Copy fonts to fonts folder" check box. The new fonts are saved in the Windows\Fonts folder. Click "OK" to complete the installation.
