How to Replace the Windows Registry

by TS Jordan, Demand Media

The registry of your computer is the location containing all of the variables that make up your Windows operating system and the software installed on your computer, making it essential to a working PC. Replacing the registry can be done by utilizing the System Restore feature to revert the registry's current status with that of a previous registry, enabling you to reverse unwanted changes and fix system problems.

Step 1

Click "Start" and select "All Programs." Open the "Accessories" folder, then click the "System Restore" option in the "System Tools" folder.

Step 2

Click "Restore my computer."

Step 3

Click on the system checkpoint in the calendar containing the registry file with which you wish to replace the current registry.

Step 4

Click "Next" to begin the automated restoration process. The computer will restart after the restoration is finished.

Tips

  • If restoring has unwanted side effects, you can go back to "System Restore" and undo the last restore operation.
  • System Restore will not delete any user created files in your profile.

Warnings

  • Restoring your computer is not an effective way of removing a virus.
  • Restoring your computer will remove programs you installed after the restore point.
