How to See What Keywords Resulted in a Specific Web Page

Keywords drive viewers to websites via search engines.

There are three ways to analyze keywords on a Web page. You can find out what keywords the Web page author intended the page to target. You can find out where a Web page ranks for a specific keyword phrase among the search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and Live (Bing). Also, you can find out what keywords are actually bringing visitors to your Web site's page.

  • Keyword Position Finder (available online)

How to See What Keywords a Web Page Targets

Step 1

Enter the URL address for the Web page you want to investigate and go to that Web site page.

Step 2

Click on the "View" option in your browser menu bar then select "Source." This will bring up the plain text HTML code for that Web page in your computer's notepad software.

Step 3

Look for the keyword meta data in the HTML code. It will be near the top. To find it quickly you can perform a search in your notepad. Go to "Edit" in the menu bar and select "Find." Type in the phrase "keywords" (include the quotation marks). The entire keyword meta data code will look something like this:

Compare the author's keyword intention with the actual density and prominence of those keywords on that Web page. Use the Keyword Density Analyzer link at the end of this article. Type in the URL address for that web page and submit your query. It will provide you with a statistical analysis of all the words and phrases on that Web page.

How to See Where a Web Page Ranks for a Specific Keyword Phrase

Step 1

Use the Keyword Position Finder resource at the end of this article to look up where a Web page currently ranks for a specific keyword or keyword phrase in the Google, Yahoo, and Live (Bing) search engines.

Step 2

Enter the URL address for the web page you're investigating, and type in the keyword or keyword phrase to find its current ranking.

Step 3

Choose "1 to 100" to see if and where that page ranks among the top 100 search results for your chosen keyword with the Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines. Choose "100 to 200" to see if and where that page ranks among the search results that fall between the 100 and 200 ranking order for your chosen keyword with the Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines. You can repeat these steps until you reach 1,000. This particular keyword position finder allows you to check the page ranking for the top 1,000 search results for any given keyword.

Tips

  • If you want to know what keywords are bringing visitors to your website's pages, you can sign up for Google Analytics. The service is free. It allows you to install an HTML tracking code in your Web pages. Among the wealth of useful information this tracking code allows you to trace, it lets you know what keywords and phrases are actually driving traffic to your site among all the different search engines and what specific pages these keywords apply to.
