by TS Jordan, Demand Media

Transferring your computer server from its original role to that of desktop computer requires only that you install a more conventional operating system upon it, relinquishing its former reliance on server-based operating systems such as Windows 2003 Server. Reinstalling a new operating system can generally be done in around 60 minutes, after which you will be able to use your server as a desktop computer.

Items you will need

  • Windows installation disk

Step 1

Insert the Windows installation disc into the computer.

Step 2

Restart the server and click any button to boot from CD.

Step 3

Select your keyboard, language and currency preference.

Step 4

Click "Install Now," select "Get Important Updates," and enter your product ID number.

Step 5

Click "I Accept" to agree to the license terms and select a "Custom" installation.

Step 6

Click "Advanced Drive Options." Select the option to "Delete" the existing server's partition. Choose the option to "Create" a new partition for your non-server installation of Windows.

Step 7

Highlight the new partition and press "Next" to install your operating system.
